JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi lawmakers say they're trying to put the brakes on street racing.

The House and Senate passed bills Monday that would prohibit the use of nitrous oxide in the fuel for cars, trucks or motorcycles. The chemical compound is used to boost the horsepower in gasoline engines.

The bills are named for Mississippi Highway Patrol Master Sgt. Steve Hood, who was killed in a high-speed chase in May 2009. Hood's car left the highway and hit a tree near Brice's Crossroads Military Park near the border of Lee County and Prentiss County.

Hood's widow and children watched as lawmakers passed separate bills. The House and Senate must agree on a single bill before it could go to the governor.


The bills are House Bill 1122 and Senate Bill 2596.

ok so does this mean it is going to be illegal to hav a nitrous system on your car, or to just use it? because it would be hard to prove whether or not you were using it if it is installed on your car.

I love how they say "street racers fuel booster" as if it's only street racers that use it.
While there at it they should ban all types of F/I?

I saw a vid where a guy had nitrous on a r/c car, would that be illegal as well?

Here is the language of the actual bill:

To me it sounds like just the use of the system is illegal so if you get stopped for street racing and you have a bottle now you have two tickets.

This is all because a state trooper got killed while chasing a guy in an LS1 car that he had no chance of catching even if the car was stone stock. When they finally picked the guy up they found a nitrous kit on his car.
