Yes, you have to remove the axle to install the gears but they are not hard to remove. They are only held in by C-clips and it only takes about 10 minutes to remove them. As for upgrading the axles and using C-clip eliminators, if you have the cash do it at the same time especially if you are going to pay someone to do it. You'll save money because they already have to remove the axle. However, installing C-clip eliminators is labor intensive and will cost a good deal more. If I remember correctly, it took me 3 or 4 hours to install them on my Chevelle. If the carrier bearings are in good shape you can save some money by reusing them. I didn't need to replace the carrier bearings when I rebuilt the carrier in my Explorer at 120,000 miles. They still looked good.
